Vibe: New York City’s got just about everything you could ask for—everything, that is, except for a down-to-earth surfer hangout somewhere near Penn Station where you can host a killer, beachy birthday party. Actually… NYC’s got that too, thanks to Lucy’s Cantina Royale.
Spot: Bright and nautical inside and out, Lucy’s is a vacation from the barren area around Penn Station, replacing the dull, bland options in the area with colorful, communal tables, hanging lights encased in rope, and a surf shack atmosphere totally unique to the area (and complete with actual surf boards, bamboo, and wooden captain’s wheels). The eatery and sports bar also includes multiple outdoor areas—heated and filled with tropical trees, of course. A couple margaritas in, you and your birthday party guests will officially be on PTO.
Grub: A serious upgrade on any other food options in the area, Lucy’s offers authentic tacos, burritos, and salads with pork, pulled chicken, or skirt steak. The Cantina also features some delicious value-added takes on pub fare, like the Baja Sliders with chipotle mayo and chipotle ketchup, or the Border Wings with mango salsa. And let’s not forget the highlight of any birthday party: the drinks. Lucy’s assumes correctly—that you’ll need plenty of tequila for this beach party. A huge list with tons of options for blanco, reposado, and anejo, Lucy’s has plenty of sip-worthy tequilas (not that your party will be at a sipping pace, of course). And with great tequila comes great mixed drinks (and hopefully no responsibilities, at least for the night), with concoctions like the Cactus Rose (Leblon cachaca infused with chipotle peppers, fresh lime, passion fruit) and the "La Playa Punch" (Cherries and Avion Tequila) joining mojitos and margaritas on the cocktail list.
The Deal: Lucy’s Cantina Royale makes Penn Station a gateway to something much more interesting than the suburbs. A whole lot more surf than turf, Lucy’s is the spot to turn a birthday party into your very own beach vacation right here in New York. And hey, if your guests do need to stumble back to the suburbs later (God bless ‘em), that nearby train will feel a whole lot more tropical than usual this time around.
