Vibe: If there’s a game that can be played with a beer in hand or within reach, you’ll win it (or you’ll damn well catch a buzz trying). Sure, you could shelve your competitive side for your birthday party, replacing your dominating bar-game skill with camaraderie, but… well, where’s the fun in that? Up the entertainment and the competition (and the drinks, of course) with NYC’s newest gamer’s haven, Greenwich Village Country Club.
Spot: In the 16,000-square-foot space previously occupied by Carnival (above Bowlmor Lanes), Greenwich Village Country Club is anything but stuffy, even if some of the games are of WASP descent. Self-proclaimed as “NYC’s only indoor mini golf, bar & lounge” (and this is a trust-worthy statement), GVCC is a giant expanse of billiards, air hockey, shuffleboard, bocce ball, foosball, beer pong, and a 9-hole mini golf course lined with plastic animals restored from a 50s-era amusement park. Of course, serious gaming and drinking means a serious dance party is probably next, and they planned for that as well: Once you’ve embarrassed enough of your friends (or yourself) through “friendly” competition, your birthday party can really heat up in The Clubhouse, a roomy dance space surrounded by curved banquets and lined with country club plaid and AstroTurf accents. Not that you’ll notice any of this once the bottle service starts, but Greenwich Village Country Club does a nice job of mixing the kitchy and the cushy.
Grub: David Burke brings his comfy bar favorites to GVCC, like corn-dog skewers, BBQ pulled pork on mini potato rolls, mini sliders, and Bob's Badass Burger (burger topped with bacon, spicy shrimp tempura, sharp cheddar, and blue-cheese slaw). Drinks range from bottle service to PBRs, and of course you can never go wrong with a John Daly (sweet tea vodka and lemonade).
The Deal: A birthday party in New York City can be many things, but nowhere else in the city lets a party be so many things at once. Delicious, easy food, a wide range of drinks, dancing, and enough activities to satisfy your inner hyperactive 8th-grader, Greenwich Village Country Club is heavy on the camp, heavy on the games, and, needless to say, heavy on the booze-fueled good times.
